On Jul. 12 2015, Iraqi President Fouad Massoum signed off an execution order that will see thousands of alleged ‘terrorist-offenders’ killed, without trial.
The government believes that the men currently held in detention — mainly at Nasiriyya prison — are guilty of committing acts of terror. Yet evidence that supports these claims has not been produced. Some of these so called offenders arrived at unknown prisons after they were captured by al Hashd A’Shaabi, Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Force (PMF).
Prisons are increasingly manned by militia outfits belonging to the PMF umbrella organisation, where torture and mistreatment of Sunni inmates is common.
Massoum has sounded assurances claiming that the execution order has been blessed by a special committee that investigated each case.
The news report below speaks of coercion and blackmail as the causes behind Massoum’s endorsement.
It question whether the decision to ratify this order, should be strictly in the hands of the President.
