MISSION STATEMENT
FOREIGN RELATIONS BUREAU - Iraq
(“FRB-I”)
(“FRB-I”)
Decades of merciless destruction in Iraq, and the present efforts of foreign powers to dismember the country into enclaves, is no longer news that elicits shock or distress. As the world disengages with developments on the ground, Iraqis inside, contend with the recurrent abuse of power, endemic corruption, marauding militias, and even simpler tasks, of feeding hungry mouths.
Fresh waves of displacement occur daily, in a country where every private life is militarized. War is the most recognisable source of Iraqi suffering, but not the only one. Deliberate misinformation is another; promotion of unsubstantiated arguments and figures. This serves to prolong the suffering of Iraq’s people, while promoting a new class of ‘experts’ with no arsenal of credible solutions.
On January 25 2011, in the midst of political deadlock, a series of protests unfurled nationwide in Iraq. This organised ‘day of rage’ modelled on uprisings in Tunisia, and the subsequent protests it inspired, were written into history as Iraq’s own spring.
The response of the state, under the stewardship of Nouri al Maliki, was as many predicted, merciless. Many of protester demands voiced then, formed the basis of FRB’s mission and vision for a free and equitable Iraq.
These are the issues that inspired the formation of FRB, as well as the Iraqi state’s failure to restrict the powers of unpopular militia bands and terrorists. A large network of Iraqi intellectuals, analysts, and former politicians make up the FRB community and team. FRB believes in a united Iraq, for every Iraqi, regardless of sect, religion or political beliefs. As a unified collective, we denounce what has been done to Iraq, and the government installed by an occupational force.
We represent, first and foremost, Iraqis, in their country and in exile, denied a voice by international and local mainstream press. We offer them a platform, to expose efforts to refashion the country’s demography, human rights abuses, and the ulterior gains that inform the actions of domestic and external actors in Iraq. We offer an independent, uncensored, unbiased and collective voice. FRB is here to deliver to the world the real demands of Iraqi people. Those who want to help, will have to listen to the community affected, to reach viable solutions as an alternative to those proposed by America.
